In my review of Lilin’s other book “Free Fall”, I said that his writing about the war in Chechnya knocked the educazinoe off Vietnam War books. And in this, his earlier memoir about his childhood, Siberian criminal culture is laid bare and knocks all Mafia tales into a cocked hat.

Exotic, brutal and frankly bizarre, it’s a tale of an old culture with all its values and mores that seem to derive from another planet.

But the book is siberjana fascinating. The Siberians here don’t even live in Siberia, In my review of Lilin’s other book “Free Fall”, I said that his writing about the war in Chechnya knocked the spots off Vietnam War books. The Siberians here don’t even live in Siberia, but in a region between Moldova and Ukraine after exile under the Communists as Siberia became the preserve of the Gulags and the local ‘honest’ criminals were displaced in the prisons by political prisoners.

A fiercely proud and independent criminal culture who stubbornly resisted integration under the Communists, now find themselves trying to preserve their independent traditions in the face of the new Russia and Capitalism. They have a strange mix of Orthodox religion and criminality, in which God is used in elliptical codes that the police and authorities can’t pierce.

They refer to themselves as men of honour, bringing the justice of God to their criminal, anti-authoritarian activities. The bodycount is high in the book, for those who dishonour the strange etiquette built of honourable behaviour. And yet this etiquette is utterly predicated on respect like any Mafiosa, albeit one more embedded on your actual deeds, rather than naked shows of power. The language and etiquette apart from being religious is also rather poetic and lyrical, because it’s formal.

It’s like something out of Shakespeare’s portrayals of high nobility. They are criminals and yet their code demands they remain humble. They eschew flagrant shows of wealth. The money is really only spent on every day living, guns and religious icons. They despise gangsters who wear gold, instead they have their copious tattoos tell their stories for them. At the time of writing this novel, Lilin was a professional tattooist in Italy, bringing his native skills with him.

It’s hard to see quite why these criminals worked so hard to rob for money, when they didn’t really spend it, other than helping out less fortunate members of their community, which usually meant widows of other criminals who maybe wouldn’t have needed financial help if their men hadn’t worked so fatally hard being criminals In fact the most money appearing in the book was for a community raised reward to track down the perpetrators of the rape of an autistic girl.

And the strange rules of the community meant that only the juveniles could go about seeking out the perpetrators and seeking justice, because they equated to the same age of the victim. This chapter was seriously fascinating and educazoine in equal counts.

Educazione siberiana

A sibeirana from a seriously exotic outpost of the educazioe. I know I got this book for free, but at the risk of sounding biased I absolutely loved this book! It’s written in a straight forward style that’s direct and to the point which I found to be really refreshing. You will not find flowery language, run on sentences or fluff here.

This is a no holds barred account of growing up in a community where violence is a way of life and it was chilling, disturbing and enlightening all at the same time.

I was fascinated by the dichotomy of their culture siveriana t I know I got this book for free, but at the risk of sounding biased I absolutely loved this book!

I was fascinated by the dichotomy of their culture with thieves and vagabonds on the one hand and yet their sense of freedom, honor, justice and commitment to family and community is enviable.

Nicolai’s detailed explanations behind the old traditions from the way the criminals interact with one another and those outside of their community not all criminals hold to the same code of honor to the story behind the tattooing made me feel totally immersed in his world. I personally could not put this book down.

I highly recommended this book for anyone who enjoys reading memoirs with a gritty edge and who isn’t bothered by the lack of a feel good happy ending. Aug 29, Marco rated it it was amazing.

Feb 02, Giada rated it librk was amazing.

Savages, pure and antouched by the civilization. I come from Romania, near to Ucraina, Moldova and Russia. Is like a deja vu from what my grandfather used to tell me about the comunist era.

Nov 08, Claudia rated it it was amazing.

Educazione siberiana by Nicolai Lilin (5 star ratings)

Siberian education is the true story of Nicolai Lilin growing up in a place where the only way to survive is to be a criminal, Transnistria. The story starts off with a quick fire fight scene to give you an idea of what this world efucazione all about then it goes to the beginning with his childhood. The book talks a little about tattoos and their meaning which I found to libto super interesting and my favorite part. The second to last chapter is a great read and very heart wrenching as well.

Nicolai is a great story teller in my opinion because he does go off on tangents like you would when sitting down and telling a person a story. I would recommend to anyone who is interested in seeing the view of a criminal world or just a great true story. Ssiberiana you first reads! I myself came from a similar background as the author, born in a family of the people he calls ”blatnoy”, and I can tell that all of these rules and customs he writes about are true even if it’s hard to believe for some people from western countries.

educasione

But now the customs of ”blatnoy” and siberian urka’s are mixed together, no longer are they so different, some of the customs are still alive, some are probably only used by the oldest families in Siberia. I know the prison life very good myself I myself came from a similar background as the author, born in a family of the people he calls ”blatnoy”, and I can tell that all of these rules and customs he writes about are true even if it’s hard to believe for some people from western countries.

I know the prison life very good myself even if I never have been arrested, but my father spend a lot of time here, my husband is doing his second year here, I myself got married to him in prison and my brother is waiting for his 14 years sentence. It was just such a great pleasure to read a true book which was the first book telling about true life of our people, I had ever readevery custom here is a wonderful example of a life of a true honorable criminal, I especially loved that the author used the words we actually are using every sibeeriana.

I can recommend this book to anyone who want’s to found out about eastern european criminals, I don’t think there is another book who actually represents our world better, because all the books I’ve read before and all the movies I’ve watched about eastern european criminals before are just a total crap, it looks like a comedy to us. So I want to congratulate the author for writing a wonderful and fascinating book.

This is a culture that adheres to a strict and complicated moral code and does not recognize the authority of the state, but rather, of their own community. For many readers, it will be easy to make comparisons to organized crime cultures like that of the Mafia, but this would be a very superficial reading of this book.

Many of the stories are quite harrowing and disturbing, but this is a great introduction to a culture and history that most will not already be familiar with.

Without a doubt the most fascinating, shocking and moving book I’ve ever read. I picked it up for a couple of pound one day in HMV thinking educazilne sounded interesting and would fill in time at work when nobody was about, never thought I would get so drawn into the story of such an intriguing culture I previously knew nothing about.

Educazlone about good and evil, right and wrong, I got so sucked into this amazing story of growing up in a world so siberkana from my own and anything I have ever read a Without a doubt the most fascinating, shocking and moving book I’ve ever read. Forgetting about good and evil, right and wrong, I got so sucked into this amazing story of growing up in a world so different from my own and anything I have ever read about or heard of before, of old Siberian traditions, honest criminals, loyalty and friendship.

I felt quite sad when I got to the end of educaziine book, which had nothing to do with the actual story, it was simply because Ljbro wanted to find out more about this amazing other world. Aug 24, Chordeva rated it it was amazing. Demonised for living beyond the state borders of Eastern Europe.
